Dietmar Eiden, Vice president Trade Fair Management Koelnmesse GmbH talks exclusively to Frozen Food Europe in this interview, about the business opportunities, trends and innovation which formed the basis of this year’s Anuga trade fair in Cologne.

How would you characterize this edition of Anuga?

Anuga 2017 achieved outstanding results. The previous editions – 2011, 2013, 2015 – all were very good and very successful. But in 2017 we were able to assemble a new record number of exhibitors – over 7,400 – and an increased number of trade visitors. Above that the quality of the business contacts and the deals that were done were extraordinary. We concentrated on business, on quality and on innovations at Anuga – and the worldwide participants responded to these notions absolutely positively.

What are your thoughts on the trends reflected at this year’s event?

The innovations, which as always were a key focus of Anuga, contributed towards providing the industry with new impulses and ideas. These trend themes included food and beverages that are rich in protein, new products on the theme “superfoods” and numerous new ready-to-go/ready-to-eat ideas. Sustainable concepts as well as organic products were still high in demand, vegetarian and vegan themes were also a major focus. Alternative sources of protein like insects were a theme of intense discussion among the media.

How was the frozen food segment represented?

The frozen food segment added to the innovations subject essentially. The major trends were mirrored by different products. Many products were enriched by protein of instance, among them a frozen breakfast bowl that also contained superfoods as quinoa or acai. Sustainability, clean label and traceability are important characteristics in frozen food products. Nearly all frozen food producers refrain from artificial ingredients for example. Above all: the convenience factor is elaborated at a high level: Frozen food products, especially prepared meals, safe time for preparation and cooking. They are basically modern and suit the life of the modern societies.
