Black is Back: UK Gets First Black Ice Cream

Rossi’s Ice Cream in the UK has produced what they call the first black vanilla ice cream in the country this summer, named “jet black vanilla”. The company representatives, quoted by UK media, say their intention was to break with tradition, while also keeping an original vanilla taste, while the color of the product involves the use of a special black dye.

“We saw that a company in America had created something using black charcoal, and we wanted to do something like that ourselves. But we didn’t want to have that charcoal taste, so we added some dye to change the color instead and it comes out as a deep black,” said Matt Davis, events and promotions manager at Rossi’s, quoted by echo-news.co.uk.

Pietro and Luisa Rossi moved from Consett, County Durham to Southend in 1932 to start an Ice Cream business with a local family, also called Rossi. They started trading at 1 Marine Parade, 37 High Street, and Western Esplanade.
