Spain’s Europastry Buys Regional Frozen Dough Maker

Spain’s leading frozen dough maker, Barcelona-based Europastry, has strengthened its national standing by acquiring regional producer Sualba.

The takeover, announced on 14 June, provides a further push into the Comunitat Valenciana region immediately to the south of Catalonia, which as well as having a large residential population is also a popular holiday area, including the seaside resorts of the Costa Blanca. Sualba is based in the suburban town of Paterna, on the outskirts of the city of Valencia.

Founded 35 years ago, its last reported figures showed a turnover of EUR 11.6 million for 2014. Apart from selling frozen dough, it also sells ingredients to bakers, the restaurant trade and specialist shops. The company has made its name in producing a range of artisanal bread and cake mixes, often made to traditional regional recipes.

Europastry, the pioneer in the frozen dough sector in Spain, is best known for its Fripan brand. It recorded sales of EUR429m in 2014, and said it would be looking to promote value added products with the takeover of Sualba.
