The BIOFACH Congress 2027 will place the resilience of global food systems at the center of discussions as the organic sector confronts growing challenges linked to climate change, biodiversity loss, geopolitical instability and public health. Held in Nuremberg from 16 to 19 February 2027, the event will bring together stakeholders from across agriculture, food processing, retail, foodservice and policymaking under the theme, “Securing Food Systems – The Organic Way.”
Organized by BIOFACH in partnership with international patron IFOAM – Organics International and national supporting organization BÖLW, the German Organic Food Industry Association, the congress will examine how organic agriculture can contribute to more secure and sustainable food systems through climate-resilient farming practices, transparent supply chains supported by digital technologies and the development of new plant-based protein sources.
The event comes at a time when mounting environmental and economic pressures are testing food production systems worldwide. Organizers argue that food security can no longer be viewed solely through the lens of production volumes, but must also encompass environmental stewardship, sustainable diets and resilient value chains.
A key objective of the congress is to strengthen connections across the organic ecosystem, from primary production to consumers, while addressing several fundamental questions: What truly secures today’s food supply? How can organic farming contribute to healthier food systems? And how can policymakers and markets accelerate this transition?
To support these discussions, BIOFACH has redesigned the structure of its conference program. The previous forum format has been replaced by five thematic tracks intended to provide greater focus and encourage more targeted dialogue.
The Food Systems Transformation track will explore resilience, food security, innovation and social change, while Advancing Organic Agriculture will address topics ranging from soil health and biodiversity to climate adaptation and new approaches to value creation. Retail & Value Chains will focus on trade, processing, branding, supply chain development and emerging business models, while Policy & Markets will examine regulation, certification and market developments at national and international levels. The Food, Health & Impact track will address nutrition, planetary health, plant-based diets, longevity and scientific research on sustainable food systems.
Scientific perspectives will be integrated across all tracks rather than presented as a standalone program area. BIOFACH is also expanding its SustainableFutureLab, an interactive platform designed to encourage unconventional ideas and debate on the future of food.
With its revised format, BIOFACH Congress 2027 aims to strengthen its role as a leading international platform for shaping the future of sustainable food systems and advancing the role of organic agriculture in global food security.
