Romania has surpassed Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and France, in order to win the golden medal during this year’s Ecotrophelia Awards, held at SIAL.
Ecotrophelia, or the European Awards for Food Innovation represent a reference point in Europe for almost 20 years. The awards target university teams of young people and their coaches, who are encouraged to come up with innovative products that will dictate the food trends of tomorrow.
This year, 17 universities from all over Europe took part in the competition, with products such as Panggies – Breakfast Pancakes based on a mix of powdered vegetables or Hush – The first gourmet fruit-based beverage meant to hydrate.
Romania won the golden medal and was presented with a grant of EUR 5000 during SIAL 2018, for an innovative ice cream called Whoopie Ice, an eco-innovation based on concentrated lactose serum, flavored with locally-sourced fruits. The winning team belongs to the university of Dunarea de Jos from Galati and is a part of the Romanian Association of Food Industry Professionals from Romania.
Second place went to Denmark for a powder mix of vegetables and vegan cheese with nuts, which can be used as a cooking additive, while bronze was awarded to Germany, for its Biscuit Cake for Breakfast, based on ingredients such as caffeine, guarana and algae.
More details about SIAL will be available in an extended feature included in our November-December print issue.
