Welch’s Expands Into Frozen Foods With Launch of Larger PB&J Sandwiches

Welch’s is expanding into the frozen food category with the launch of Real PB&Js, a new line of frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches designed to appeal to consumers seeking a more substantial grab-and-go meal.

The company said the new sandwiches are made with real ingredients, contain 12 grams of protein and are 50% larger than the leading national brand’s 2-ounce frozen PB&J sandwich. Welch’s said consumer research indicated that traditional frozen PB&J portion sizes no longer meet the needs of many young adults, prompting the company to develop a larger alternative.

“When we asked what consumers would want from a PB&J if we were creating it today, the answer was surprisingly simple,” said Andrew Hartshorn, Chief Brand and Innovation Officer at Welch’s. “They wanted a bigger sandwich for bigger appetites, one that actually fills them up. Real PB&Js were created to deliver exactly that, a familiar favorite with the size, protein and real ingredients consumers told us they were looking for.”

Real PB&Js are made with fresh-baked bread, creamy peanut butter and Welch’s fruit spreads. The sandwiches are available in Concord Grape Jelly, Strawberry Jam and a new Mixed Fruit spread inspired by the brand’s Fruit Snacks. According to the company, the products contain no artificial colors or high-fructose corn syrup. Each individually wrapped sandwich provides 12 grams of protein and is a good source of fiber. The sandwiches are sold in six-count boxes for freezer storage.

The launch marks Welch’s latest effort to broaden its product portfolio while responding to changing consumer preferences. The company said the new offering is intended to meet demand for more filling convenience foods without sacrificing the taste and ingredient quality associated with the Welch’s brand.
