In a significant move towards sustainable packaging, industry leaders SÜDPACK and LEIBINGER have announced a collaborative project aimed at meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly food packaging solutions.
This partnership comes as a response to the increasing pressure on manufacturers to adopt recyclable packaging materials in line with upcoming EU regulations.
The joint venture focuses on testing the compatibility of Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) inks with recyclable films designed for packaging food that undergoes post-packaging sterilization. This innovative approach is set to save food manufacturers valuable time and ensure investment security in the face of changing industry standards.
The EU Packaging Regulation, which mandates all packaging in the EU market to be recyclable by 2030, has been a driving force behind this collaboration. As composite materials are gradually phased out in favor of monomaterials, the challenge lies in developing packaging solutions that maintain food safety standards while meeting recyclability requirements.
SÜDPACK, a leader in the packaging market, has been actively expanding its portfolio of recyclable film solutions. The company is developing monomaterials that aim to match the convenience and protective qualities of traditional composite materials. Complementing this effort, LEIBINGER, an industrial printing specialist, is offering industrial inkjet printers and developing special CIJ inks in collaboration with SIS Ink Solution, a LEIBINGER Group company.
The partnership between these two Swabian family-run companies was conceived during a meeting at the PackExpo trade fair in Chicago in 2022. Their shared goal is to provide food manufacturers with a pre-tested packaging and printing solution that addresses key customer requirements, particularly the need for harmless ink that won’t migrate to food products.
This collaboration represents a significant step forward in the packaging industry’s transition towards more sustainable practices. By combining SÜDPACK’s expertise in recyclable packaging materials with LEIBINGER’s advanced printing technologies, the project aims to offer a comprehensive solution that meets both regulatory requirements and consumer demands for eco-friendly packaging.
As the packaging market undergoes fundamental changes, initiatives like this SÜDPACK-LEIBINGER partnership are crucial in driving innovation and ensuring that the industry can meet future sustainability challenges head-on.
