JM Smucker Brings New Leadership in Bid to Sustain Growth Strategy

The J.M. Smucker Co. said it has implemented a series of senior leadership changes aimed at supporting the company’s long-term growth strategy, strengthening execution across its portfolio of brands and improving profitability and earnings performance.

Tucker Marshall, previously the company’s chief financial officer, has been promoted to the newly created role of Chief Financial Officer | Executive Vice President, Frozen Handheld and Spreads and Sweet Baked Snacks.

Alongside his responsibilities for financial reporting, internal audit, tax and treasury, financial planning and analysis, investor relations and corporate development, Mr. Marshall’s remit has been broadened to include strategic oversight of the company’s US retail frozen handheld and spreads, sweet baked snacks and international businesses, each of which will continue to be led by its own general manager. He will also take responsibility for the company’s sales function.

Rob Ferguson, formerly Senior Vice President and General Manager of Coffee and Procurement, has been named Chief Product Supply Officer | Executive Vice President, Coffee, Pet, and Away from Home. In his expanded position, Mr. Ferguson will oversee operations, distribution, supply chain, procurement, commodity hedging, quality assurance, research and development and cost and productivity initiatives, including the company’s Transformation Office. His responsibilities will also extend to strategic leadership of Smucker’s US retail coffee, US retail pet foods and Away From Home businesses, which will remain under their respective general managers.

Jill Penrose, who has served as Chief People and Company Services Officer, has been promoted to the expanded role of Chief People and Administrative Officer | Chief of Staff. Ms. Penrose will now manage corporate strategy and chief of staff duties in addition to her ongoing oversight of communications, public relations, government and industry relations, human resources, community relations and philanthropy.

The company also said it has eliminated its chief operating officer role, and that John Brase has departed Smucker as a result. Mark Smucker has resumed the title of president, serving as Chief Executive Officer, President and Chair of the Board.

All of the leadership changes took effect February 9. Mr. Marshall and Ms. Penrose will continue reporting directly to Mr. Smucker, and Mr. Ferguson will now do the same. Jeannette Knudsen, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary, will continue to report to Mr. Smucker, as will Katie Williams, the newly elected Chief Marketing Officer, whose appointment was announced February 5.
