Begro, a Dutch family business responsible for processing fresh and frozen vegetables with an annual volume of 200,000 tons, decided to install Tomra’s Blizzard for sorting control, before the packaging stage of the final product. Begro is active in both foodservice, hospitality and retail sectors, operating in 62 countries, servicing every major national retailer in Belgium.
“We have a motto of ‘Great taste in frozen foods’, which means not only do we stand for the optimal delivery of the product to the customer, but also strive for the highest possible customer satisfaction. After an internal analysis, we noticed that we were receiving some consumer complaints, and we needed to use a sorting machine during the packaging process. The TOMRA Blizzard has produced excellent benefits for us such as optimizing the line speed, and it is especially useful for the removal of foreign objects such as hard plastic and wood,” says Begro’s representative.
By using the TOMRA Blizzard, the company generated much less food waste than in the past, because the proportion of good product being rejected was much lower. That provides Begro with a double advantage: not only have their customer complaints reduced but they are also removing lower numbers of useable product from the line. Thus, the Blizzard has had a positive impact on food safety, because it is so easy to clean, which means we the company has fewer problems with cross-contamination, explained Begro’s representative.
According to the company, since working with TOMRA, Begro has been able to reduce 50% of their staff on every packaging line, while in terms of value for money, the representative says that the TOMRA Blizzard has a much shorter ROI, as they have much less food waste, and especially because they can save a lot of labor.
