German Potato Trade Association Shares Stories from the Potato Universe

To mark the 2nd International Day of the Potato on May 30, 2025, the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV) and the Union of the German Potato Industry (UNIKA) are launching a seven-part LinkedIn series titled “Potato.Cosmos.Culture. – Stories from the Potato Universe.”

Beginning May 24, 2025, the campaign invites audiences on a multifaceted journey through the global potato universe. At its heart is the worldwide significance and versatility of the potato—from its role as a staple food to its cultural, economic, and scientific dimensions. The series presents the potato as a nutritious food, a cultural icon, and a surprising source of inspiration—across the globe and beyond.

Through engaging, well-researched content, the series highlights international potato trends: from the Big Idaho Potato Hotel in the U.S., to the Korean Netflix series “The Potato Lab,” to tuber formation in zero gravity. It illustrates how the potato connects cultures around the world, sparks innovation, and leaves its mark on everything from space exploration to the music scene.

A Food with History and a Future

In 2023, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared May 30 as the International Day of the Potato. This designation offers an opportunity to recognize the potato’s importance in Germany as well—as a sustainable, healthy, and versatile food, and as a vital agricultural commodity.

Moreover, the potato scores high on ecological efficiency, nutritional value, and culinary diversity. Its exceptional adaptability makes it a cornerstone of global food security and a powerful driver of innovation in industry, research, and society.
