Mondi, Syntegon Team Up to Develop New Recyclable Paper-based Packaging

For dried commodities like flour, sugar, and pasta, Mondi, a pioneer in packaging and paper, has teamed up with Syntegon, a producer of process and packaging equipment, to develop a recyclable paper packaging solution using recycled fibers.

The award-winning EcoVantage kraft paper from Mondi, which has received ISEGA approval for usage in the whole food packaging industry, is used for the packaging. EcoVantage was previously primarily used to make paper shopping bags and is manufactured from recycled and ethically sourced fresh fibers. In order to address the growing demand from consumers for paper-based packaging, Mondi has been able to broaden its use through its dedication to investing in research and development and its successful partnerships with industry players.

In order to manufacture dust-tight, heat-sealable packaging that prevents contamination throughout the entire product lifecycle, from production to the consumer’s house, Syntegon uses EcoVantage rollstock from Mondi. The exclusive technology of Syntegon ensures that only the necessary amount of sealing agent is utilized. Their technology’s adaptability guarantees packaging strength and protection for food products that are powdered and recyclable in current paper streams.

By utilizing recycled fibers, the creation of these novel packaging solutions highlights a crucial aspect of Mondi Group’s MAP2030 ambitions. According to Mondi’s Recycling Lab, EcoVantage kraft paper reduces waste, maintains materials in use, and may be recycled in paper waste streams that already exist.

“It is our goal to create sustainable packaging solutions with the minimum environmental impact possible. With paper packaging that is both recyclable and containing recycled material we are making a big step towards closing the circularity loop for primary food packaging,” said Torsten Sauer, director of Sustainability at Syntegon.
