Seafrigo Australia, operating under the Mode Logistics brand, has opened a 10,000-square-meter warehouse at Melbourne Airport, quadrupling its previous capacity and strengthening its position in the country’s food logistics sector.
The facility is designed to meet growing demand for export logistics, particularly in airfreight, where time-sensitive shipments require precision handling. “We’re no longer a step behind the competition — we’re a step ahead,” said Jason Farrugia, CEO of Mode Logistics. “The additional space gives us the ability to preload units overnight and again in the morning, helping us meet critical cut-off times and enhance our service reliability.”
The warehouse includes multiple temperature-controlled zones, with frozen storage maintained at minus 16°C to minus 20°C, chilled storage from 0°C to 4°C, and ambient areas for less sensitive goods. That range supports exports of meat, seafood, dairy, horticultural products and supermarket items.
Farrugia said the previous facility often forced the company to turn down business. The new site not only accommodates current demand but also positions Seafrigo to expand into new markets.
The building incorporates biosecurity-compliant features such as fumigation chambers and enclosed dock shutters, aligning with Australia’s stringent biodiversity regulations. Its location within a 400-hectare logistics hub at Melbourne Airport provides direct access to Victoria’s road network, improving connectivity across eastern Australia.
Seafrigo ranks among Australia’s top three export service providers, with about 90% of its business focused on outbound shipments. The company plans further upgrades this year, including new quality inspection capabilities and enhanced warehouse management systems.
“Our investment in this new site underscores our commitment to operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and importantly, global reach,” said Eric Barbé, Seafrigo’s president and founder. “It will open up more opportunities in other international locations, especially those in the Middle East and Asia which we serve from here.”
