Westfalia Fruit Advances Global Avocado Innovation with Pioneering Varietal Development Program

Westfalia Fruit, one of the world’s leading suppliers of avocados and fresh produce, is reshaping the future of the avocado industry through a groundbreaking varietal development program that combines traditional breeding with cutting-edge science.

The company has unveiled its extensive collection of avocado varieties — among the most diverse of its kind globally — forming the foundation of what it calls the “Orchard of the Future.”

Located in Tzaneen, South Africa, at Westfalia’s research and development hub, the program brings together more than 140 avocado varieties from around the world. Each variety, represented by up to three trees in a single orchard, serves as part of a vast genetic library used to breed new cultivars with superior qualities. The site spans over 50 hectares and is home to the largest privately funded subtropical fruit research facility in the world.

“From our 140 ‘parent’ varieties that form the foundation of our breeding journey, we have raised more than 7,000 unique avocado seedlings—fondly referred to as ‘babies’ by the team—which we are actively evaluating. Some are nearing the end of their evaluation, while others are just beginning,” said Sibongile Mhlope, Cultivar Breeding Lead at Westfalia Fruit.

Breeding the Avocado of the Future

Westfalia’s researchers are deploying advanced technologies — including DNA markers and artificial intelligence-driven analytics — to accelerate what has historically been a decades-long breeding process. These precision breeding tools enable scientists to identify promising offspring at an early stage, significantly reducing development time and improving accuracy in selecting desirable traits.

Through natural cross-pollination, the team is targeting characteristics such as flavor, texture, fruit size, yield, and resistance to pests and disease. The results are as varied as they are surprising: some fruits resemble gourds or cucumbers, while others are exceptionally large, even football-sized.

“We might one day create novel types such as, those with vibrant skin colours, unique and distinctive flavours, very large sized varieties; the possibilities are almost endless, creating choice for customers and consumers,” said Matthew Churchill, Global Brand Manager at Westfalia Fruit.

A Consumer-Driven Approach

In a shift from traditional breeding practices, Westfalia is aligning varietal development directly with consumer preferences and market needs. By working closely with retail and foodservice partners, the company aims to design avocado varieties that respond to specific flavor, texture, and size trends across global markets.

“We’re now starting conversations with our customers to imagine the future of avocado sales together, guided by what consumers want and what we can offer. It’s about closing the gap between R&D and real-world needs to grow the market,” Churchill added.

Building Resilience for a Changing Climate

Beyond market innovation, Westfalia’s breeding initiative addresses broader agricultural challenges such as climate change, disease pressure, and water scarcity. The company’s genetic library continues to expand, offering an increasingly diverse pool of parent cultivars that serve as the foundation for more resilient avocado varieties.

“Our collection of parental cultivars is constantly growing, giving us access to an ever-expanding gene pool of desirable plant characteristics. Each year, we raise thousands of seedlings—every one of them closely monitored over time to determine optimal fruit quality, yield potential, and disease resistance, and from these, we have already selected almost 100 potential varieties of the future. This long-term assessment is essential to advancing varietal development and supporting the health, vibrancy, and resilience of the entire global avocado industry,” said Dan Sargent, Global Head of R&D.

From its research orchards in South Africa to its global production network, Westfalia Fruit is positioning itself at the forefront of avocado innovation — blending science, sustainability, and consumer insight to shape the future of one of the world’s fastest-growing fresh produce markets.
