W-Cycle, Melhoramentos Partner to Advance Compostable Food Packaging

W-Cycle, Ltd., a trailblazer in sustainable food packaging, is strengthening its partnership with Brazilian conglomerate Melhoramentos to address the growing demand for plastic-free, compostable food containers.

With a broad portfolio that spans publishing, renewable forestry, and real estate, the publicly traded Melhoramentos has made a fresh investment in W-Cycle, reinforcing its push into eco-responsible packaging innovation.

The investment builds upon a USD3.4m strategic partnership established in November 2024, under which Melhoramentos secured exclusive rights to supply W-Cycle’s proprietary food-grade packaging composition in Latin America.

Over the past 18 months, Melhoramentos has been working closely with W-Cycle to integrate cellulose fibers sourced from its extensive 80-million-square-meter renewable forestry operations. A portion of the company’s pulp, traditionally used in paper and cardboard production, is now being redirected to develop high-performance compostable food containers, repurposing the natural resource for sustainable applications.

“Having successfully merged our raw materials with W-Cycle’s truly groundbreaking solution and after a year and a half of consultations and professional support, this proven and tested innovation and collaboration makes this latest investment the logical next step forward,” says Rafael Gibini, CEO of Melhoramentos.

W-Cycle’s CEO, Isaac Rome, echoes the sentiment, calling the alliance a significant step toward a more sustainable future. “We are excited and feel fortunate to collaborate with Melhoramentos in moving our venture forward,” Rome says.

“Our shared mission to improve the global food packaging value chain will help build a sustainable future for all. The financial support from this leading company gives us significant R&D leverage and acceleration into large-scale commercial deployment with multi-million-dollar revenue.”

A Breakthrough in Compostable Packaging

A rising player in clean technology, W-Cycle has pioneered a new approach to molded fiber packaging with its SupraPulp™ material. The food-grade packaging alternative allows molded fiber manufacturers to produce durable, eco-friendly trays and containers without the need for plastic lamination. Once discarded, SupraPulp decomposes fully, returning to the earth without leaving a lasting environmental footprint.

By incorporating fiber-based sidestreams such as sugarcane waste (bagasse) and eucalyptus wood fiber, W-Cycle’s proprietary additives bolster material resilience. The result is a molded fiber food packaging solution that can endure grease, moisture, and temperature variations while remaining entirely compostable.

The company’s portfolio is engineered to withstand extreme conditions, making it ideal for use in the food service and food delivery industries. Its solutions hold up against hot and oily foods, endure freezing temperatures as low as -40°C, and even resist heat up to 220°C—qualities that make them particularly attractive to caterers and ready-to-eat meal manufacturers. The technology also provides packaging manufacturers with an opportunity to upgrade their products and pivot toward a compostable future.

With the latest infusion of capital, W-Cycle plans to expand and enhance its research and development department, fine-tuning its packaging capabilities and introducing new formulations. The funding will also be used to scale operations, bolster its sales team, and strengthen its position in the rapidly growing sustainable packaging market.

The collaboration between Melhoramentos and W-Cycle signals a broader shift in the packaging industry as companies seek to align with mounting environmental and regulatory pressures. “Our collaboration with W-Cycle represents a watershed moment,” says Gibini.

“It is paving the way for us to channel our raw materials toward solving one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges: the plastic waste crisis. This partnership has simultaneously opened a significant new market for us.”

As global demand for sustainable packaging rises, Latin American manufacturers are investing in recyclable and compostable alternatives to meet consumer expectations. Research from Mordor Intelligence projects that the global sustainable packaging market will surpass $400 billion by 2029.

“This investment not only solidifies our strategic alliance with Melhoramentos, unlocking powerful synergies,” Rome says, “it also opens new doors to solutions that can tangibly address the rising calls for high-performance materials sourced from renewable resources that can effectively replace single-use plastic containers.”
