Cathay Cargo Expands Cold-Chain Logistics Network Through Hong Kong Hub

Cathay Cargo is expanding its cold-chain logistics capabilities as demand grows for faster and more tightly controlled transportation of temperature-sensitive goods, positioning Hong Kong as a strategic gateway for regional and global trade.

The company said its integrated cold-chain offering combines its Cathay Fresh and Cathay Pharma services to support shipments ranging from perishable foods to pharmaceutical products. The expansion is intended to strengthen Hong Kong’s role as an aviation and logistics hub for the Greater Bay Area and international markets.

Cathay Cargo said Hong Kong’s geographic position enables access to roughly half of the world’s population within a five-hour flight radius, a factor the company views as increasingly important for time-sensitive logistics operations.

Through the Airport Authority Hong Kong Air-Land Fresh Lane initiative, the carrier has developed an intermodal cold-chain corridor designed to move perishables such as seafood and seasonal fruit from overseas markets into the Greater Bay Area under a single air waybill.

The process allows shipments arriving through Hong Kong International Airport to move directly into mainland China using a specialized transshipment certificate that avoids more complex re-registration procedures. Cargo is transferred through refrigerated customs facilities in Zhuhai before continuing via temperature-controlled trucks equipped with GPS tracking systems.

Cathay Cargo said the system is designed to reduce transit times while preserving product quality and food safety standards throughout transport.

The company is also expanding its pharmaceutical logistics operations through Cathay Pharma, which focuses on shipments requiring strict temperature stability, including vaccines and biologic products.

Cathay Pharma operates what the company describes as the largest dedicated pharmaceutical handling center at Hong Kong International Airport, supporting four temperature-control ranges and working with six container partners across Asia. The system is supported by Ultra Track, a near-real-time cargo monitoring platform intended to provide shippers with visibility into shipment conditions during transit.

Cathay Cargo said it now operates more than 70 qualified pharmaceutical handling stations globally, part of a broader effort to strengthen reliability in life sciences transportation.

The company said its broader strategy centers on creating an integrated cold-chain platform capable of serving multiple temperature-sensitive industries under standardized international protocols. Cathay Cargo applies IATA CEIV Fresh standards for perishables and IATA CEIV Pharma requirements for pharmaceutical products in an effort to maintain consistent handling and safety standards across its logistics network.
