Romania – National Cold Store

Logistics prove to be a “booming” business in Romania as the new EU member reports an annual economic growth of 6.5 %, less trade barriers through EU membership, high investments in road infrastructure and a growing population that is consuming more convenience foods. Particularly around Bucharest and Timisoara industrial parks with logistics as the main component are constructed at such a great pace that a shortage of construction professionals is threatening. Many well-known international companies are already based in/near the Romanian capital, but the number of logistic service providers dedicated to chilled and frozen products is remarkably low. Of course, retailers like Cora, Auchan, Metro and Carrefour have dedicated providers, but the needs of importers, agents, wholesalers, manufacturers and processors cannot be met. Real estate developers have plans for cold stores and distribution center networks that can service Bucharest and 6 to 8 other major Romanian cities. One of them has asked several experts – among them Theo van Sambeeck of – to develop a concept. The plans are aimed at primary and secondary distribution of chilled and frozen foods in Romania. For more information contact:
