New front-of-pack labels

A new hybrid system of front-of-pack nutritional labelling system, including traffic lights and colour-coded GDAs (Guideline Daily Amounts), will be in place by the summer of 2013 in UK supermarkets. The new system results from extended negotiations between the government, supermarkets and suppliers. The UK already has the largest number of products with front-of-pack labels in Europe. The new labels will include the words high, medium or low to indicate levels of fat, sugar and salt in products. Some industry executives expressed concern that the new system will hurt certain product categories. They say that products such as cheese, full-fat milk, sausages and bacon will be incorrectly seen as junk food under the new system.
