BioMar UK has become the first feed producer in the United Kingdom to achieve certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), marking a significant advancement in the country’s farmed seafood industry.
The certification, awarded to BioMar’s Grangemouth facility, which produces feed for salmon and trout, represents a crucial step toward more sustainable and responsible aquaculture practices. With this certification, salmon and trout farms in the UK and beyond can now access ASC-compliant feed, further aligning the industry with growing demands for ethical production.
This achievement positions BioMar UK among Europe’s leading feed producers driving change towards greater environmental and social responsibility. It is only the second feed mill in Europe to attain ASC Feed certification, underscoring its pivotal role in supporting Scotland’s farmed salmon industry, where transparency and traceability are becoming increasingly critical.
Rob Wilson, BioMar UK’s Business Unit Director, emphasized the importance of the milestone: “Achieving ASC Feed Certification at our Grangemouth facility is a major step for BioMar UK. This demonstrates our dedication to advancing responsible aquaculture. By offering ASC-compliant feed, we not only support local farmers but also ensure that the UK’s aquaculture industry can meet the rising demand for sustainable and transparent seafood production.”
Ally Dingwall, Senior Director of Technical Operations at ASC, echoed the significance of the certification: “BioMar UK’s achievement is a key development for responsible seafood farming in the UK. Being the first ASC Feed certification in the country, it highlights their leadership within the aquafeed sector. With the 2025 deadline approaching for ASC-certified farms to use ASC-compliant feed, this certification comes at a crucial time for the industry.”
This milestone for BioMar UK adds to the company’s expanding list of ASC-certified feed mills globally, following its recent certification in Ecuador. The company’s efforts are part of a broader movement to transform aquaculture supply chains, ensuring that environmental and social responsibility are prioritized.
ASC-certified farms have until October 2025 to transition their feed supply to be ASC-compliant, a requirement for maintaining ASC certification under the ASC Farm Standard. BioMar’s leadership in meeting these rigorous standards sets a benchmark for the aquaculture industry as it moves towards more sustainable practices.
