Clarebout Potatoes, a leading Belgian frozen potato processor, is reportedly in advanced discussions with US-based agri-food conglomerate J.R. Simplot regarding a potential acquisition or strategic alliance.
The deal, speculated to be valued at approximately EUR2.5bn, could significantly reshape the global frozen potato market.
According to Belgian newspaper De Standaard, Clarebout has been engaged in negotiations with investment funds CVC Capital and Advent over the past six months. However, talks with Simplot have reportedly progressed further, with insiders suggesting the deal is nearing completion.
Despite the circulating rumors, Clarebout has not confirmed any agreement. In an internal communication to employees, the company acknowledged exploring opportunities to enter the U.S. market, including potential collaborations with local partners.
Clarebout, founded in 1988 by Jan Clarebout, has grown into the world’s third-largest producer of frozen potato products, trailing only McCain Foods and Lamb Weston. The company operates two production facilities in Belgium and is constructing a new plant in Dunkirk, France. Recent expansions include the acquisition of fellow Belgian processor Mydibel and a 50% stake in Pomuni.
J.R. Simplot, a privately held company based in Idaho, is a major player in the global agri-food sector, with operations spanning North America, Mexico, Australia, Argentina, and China. The company has yet to establish a presence in Europe, making Clarebout an attractive partner for expansion into the European market.
The potential partnership comes amid intensifying competition in the frozen potato industry. Rivals such as Agristo, Aviko, and McCain are aggressively expanding production capacities, raising concerns about overcapacity and shrinking profit margins. Belgium remains the world’s leading exporter of frozen potato products, producing 3 million of the 15.5 million tonnes consumed globally each year.
While the outcome of the Clarebout-Simplot discussions remains uncertain, the potential deal underscores the strategic importance of global partnerships in the evolving frozen potato market.
