Frozen Food Celebrates 90 Years Since It Was Invented

In 2020, frozen food is turning 90, writes in a new press release the German Frozen Food Institutes (dti).

Its invention is credited to American Clarence Birdseye, who on his research trips to Labrador in Newfoundland, observed how native Inuits froze freshly caught fish, immediately after it was pulled from the water. This inspired him to invent the freezer.

It was 90 years ago that American consumers were able to buy frozen food for the first time: vegetables, fruit and fish. The was the beginning of an exciting new type of food and to this day, industrial shock freezing is still one of the most important innovations in the food industry.

2020 is not only the 90th anniversary of frozen products worldwide, Germany also celebrates the existence of frozen foods on its market for 65 years. In 1955, German consumers were able to buy frozen products from freezers for the first time. The success has remained unbroken to this day.

In 2018, German citizens consumed on average 46kg of frozen products each – and the trend is rising, says dti.

To celebrate the occasion, dti will spotlight the latest in terms of frozen trends, sales figures and innovative new products.  Additionally, Frozen Food Day is set to take place during March 6, 2020.
