A gelato and coffee bar from Sydney, Australia, has won the Gelato World Tour this year. Named Cow and Moon, the gelato bar placed second in the Oceania category of the competition and managed to beat all the other 24 finalists from around the world, to become winner of the Gelato World Tour 2014.
The family-run business managed to impress technical judges as well as public voters, with its Mandorla affogato flavour, a recreation of the classic affogato. The gelato combined caramelised almonds sourced from Italy with single origin-roasted coffee shots on a Madagascan vanilla base.
“We’re just so excited. My family and my many connections have said that the media in Australia is going crazy over the result of the Gelato World Tour. My shop has had a huge lines out the door and down the street all day and the Mandorla Affogato has been made non stop all day. This award proves that also a foreign person can be a great gelato artisan if they study hard and work with passion and tenacity every day”, said Wendy Crowl, owner of Cow and Moon.
The second place was awarded to Francesco Mastroianni, representing gelateria Cantagalli, while Alexander Lancierini, from Gelateria Fiore, received third place.
The mission of Gelato World Tour, an event supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – General Directorate for the Promotion of National Systems, Ministry of Economic Development, Road to Expo 2015, and Emilia Romagna Region, is to spread the culture of Italian gelato, a fresh, unique artisanal food, to the public at large worldwide
