The European Commission has agreed “in principle” for mandatory origin labeling for meat and dairy in processed foods in France. The French Ministry of Agriculture said: “The Commission has given its approval in principle for France to test out origin labeling for meat and milk in processed products.” The Ministry hopes the labeling program will be in place by this summer.
Food safety MEPs gave their support for introducing mandatory country of origin labeling of meat and milk in a non-binding resolution voted on last month. The motion for a resolution restates Parliament’s position in favor of mandatory labeling of the country of origin or place of provenance of meat in processed foods. The resolution will be put to a vote at a Parliament plenary session before being sent to the Commission.
