AAK Invests in Food Tech Company Green-On

AAK AB has made the decision to invest in Green-On, a Swedish food technology start-up firm whose idea is based on so-called Power-to-X technology.

By eliminating the requirement for arable land, one of our most in-demand resources, this technology aims to produce raw materials, in this case oils and fats for food and other applications, directly from carbon dioxide, renewable energy, and water. The Power-to-X technology has the potential to hasten the creation of environmentally friendly ingredient options for technical and food products, the company says.

According to Karsten Nielsen, Chief Technology Officer at AAK, “there are currently very few plant-based oils, aside from palm oil, with which we can produce the functionality of solid, high-melting fats, which are utilized, for instance, in plant-based meat, bakery, and confectionary applications.” With a considerably smaller environmental impact than any other currently known technology, this technique “provides the exact component of the fat that is needed to construct the functionality of future food production, making it a great fit with AAK’s plan.”

AAK will contribute facilities and expertise in oils and fats as part of the investment to support and advance Green-On and its work. Through AAK’s association with Big Idea Ventures (BIV), which was started in March 2021, the collaboration with Green-On was made possible.
