Anuga Alternatives is the brand-new trade event from Anuga, the industry leader in the food and beverage industry. The trade show focuses only on a broad range of products from the protein segments that come from plants, insects, algae, mushrooms, and cell-cultivated meat.
The new trade exhibition represents the expanding demand and increased variety within the business, which offers plant-based alternatives to animal-based products through over 1,400 enterprises globally, including at least 70 in Germany. The dedication to substitute proteins is strongly related to Anuga’s overarching philosophy of “Sustainable Growth.”
“Alternative proteins are not a short-lived trend, but indeed the future of food. A healthy and sustainable supply of proteins will become an essential component for the food requirements of an ever increasing number of consumers. The market for alternative proteins is not only being pushed by the demand of the consumers, but equally by trailblazing, technological innovations. The progress made in processing plant-based sources of protein and finding new sources of protein are of central importance here. At the coming edition of Anuga, especially within the scope of Anuga Alternatives, we will examine these developments in detail,” explained Jan Philipp Hartmann, director of Anuga.
Anuga will provide a comprehensive program that includes webinars, workshops, and speaker events that focus on alternative proteins and evaluate the most recent research findings and technology advancements in light of the increased interest in sustainable food solutions around the world. Experts from the fields of science, business, and environmental protection organizations will discuss their thoughts on sources of plant-based, fermented, and cell-cultivated protein.
Anuga Alternatives discusses the technical and scientific aspects of food production as well as the social issues, such as the socioeconomic repercussions of switching to a plant-based diet, ethical food sourcing, and biodiversity preservation.
Anuga is expanding its range of plant-based own brands in response to the growing trend in the industry. This, in turn, is a response to the increasing demand from customers: Global market research firm Innova Market Insights reports that the German market for plant-based meat substitutes has grown significantly in terms of turnover and new product introductions.
The market size climbed from USD639m in 2022 to USD689m in 2023, a 7.8% increase in value between the two years. In April 2024, there was a notable surge in innovation as 27% more meat substitute goods were released to the market compared to the same period the previous year. In the category of meat substitute products, own brand companies also saw favorable growth; now, 34% of the market releases of meat substitute products in this nation are own brands.
“The figures impressively underline how the increasing consumer orientation towards plant-based products is sustainably changing the food market and opening up new growth potential. Our new trade show, Anuga Alternatives, is the answer to the market’s dynamic development towards plant-based food and a decisive trendsetter for the trade and industry. Visitors have the unique opportunity to gain in-depth insights into an aspiring industry, get to know new suppliers and products, inform themselves about the latest trends and keep abreast of the developments of the food industry of tomorrow,” stated Bastian Mingers, vice president Food Trade Fairs, Koelnmesse GmbH.
Anuga Out of Home, the previous component, is being relaunched in conjunction with the new trade expo Anuga Alternatives. To facilitate more effective matchmaking, the manufacturers will no longer be grouped under their own section but rather incorporated into the trade fairs that correspond with their respective offer.
