Norwegian seafood exports are on the rise in Norway. According to the Norwegian Seafood Council, the country exported 182,000 tons of seafood with a total value of NOK8.6bn in August. Volume decreased by 4% while export value increased by NOK768m or 9%, compared to August 2018.

In August, frozen cod and clipfish were particularly strong performers. During the period, 5,500 tons of frozen cod were exported, worth NOK226m. There was a growth in volume of 14%, while the value increased by NOK46m or 25%. So far this year, 50,000 tons of frozen cod worth NOK2.1bn have been exported. China, the U.K., and Denmark were the largest frozen cod markets in August.

Overall this year, Norway has exported 1.6m tones of seafood worth NOK68bn. Export volumes fell by 10%, while growth in value was NOK4.5bn of 7.2%.

Other highlights for August 20219 include Norwegian salmon having its strongest month so far this year, both in terms of value and volume. Only October 2018 saw higher single month export values than August this year. Norwegian salmon has seen strong demand across many markets, but especially in Asia.

Additionally, there has been significant growth in prices both in August and for this year as a whole for Norwegian king crap. King Crab is sold primarily in dollar markers, and a weak Norwegian kroner against the dollar is an important driver of the growth in prices.
