Furlani Foods has announced its acquisition of Cole’s Quality Foods, a move that unites two dominant players in the frozen garlic bread market.
This merger is set to create a powerhouse in the category, leveraging production, innovation, and supply chain efficiencies to benefit retailers, food service providers, and consumers alike.
Furlani, known for its garlic breads, Texas toast, loaves, rolls, breadsticks, and knots, is a market leader in Canada and has a robust presence in the US retail and food service sectors. Operating from facilities in Mississauga, Ontario, and Oak Creek, Wisconsin, the company has established itself as a prominent supplier of pre-packaged garlic breads under its own brand, private labels, and food service brands.
Cole’s Quality Foods, a pioneer in frozen garlic bread since its founding in 1943, has contributed significant innovation to the category. Its offerings, such as twisted and cheese-filled garlic breadsticks, are staples in the US market. With production centers in Muskegon, Michigan, and North Liberty, Iowa, Cole’s has a strong retail presence under its flagship brand.
The merger reflects a shared commitment to quality, customer service, and innovation, according to Furlani Foods CEO Jonathan Kawaja. “This combination expands our product line, enhances capacity, and strengthens service, paving the way for sustained growth,” Kawaja said. Scott Devon, CEO of Cole’s, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the alignment of values between the two companies and their dedication to sustainability.
Post-acquisition, Furlani Foods will retain its name and continue to operate from its Mississauga headquarters under Kawaja’s leadership. The transaction, subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2025.
This merger comes on the heels of Furlani’s partnership with Entrepreneurial Equity Partners in 2023, signaling its ambitions for growth and leadership in the frozen garlic bread sector.
