Jospak – a Finnish food packaging startup – has recently received BRC certification for its cardboard trays, which are marketed to customers in the food industry.
Jospak explains its packaging solution is a gas-tight boardtray that is compatible with the existing, automatic track packing processes and can be applied to diverse food products, also in MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging). The BRC certification is said to be able to guarantee Jospak’s commitment to quality and safety.
Tarja Heikkilä, Jospak’s managing director told Frozen Food Europe that Jospak offers a tray packaging solution, which helps to reduce the amount of plastics up to 85% and overpacking in general.
“Our tray is easy to recycle as the plastic film can be peeled off and both substrates can be recycled in their own waste management systems. The company is targeting the international markets, and thus we decided to certify our operations from the very beginning by BRC.”, explained Heikkilä.
According to the company, as the packaging industry is increasingly shifting towards green, the demand for such sustainable packaging alternatives will continue to be on the rise.
Currently Jospak’s reference customers include brand owners in Finland, such as Pouttu Oy, HKScan Finland and Fresh Sallad & Deli, but the start-up is currently working with several food brand owners and will announce more collaborations soon.
BRC (British Retail Consortium) Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials is an internationally recognized guideline that lays out the requirements for the manufacture and materials used in food packaging. It’s the first standard to be recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GSFI) benchmarking committee. Over 4200 suppliers from around the globe have applied and received the certification, 14 of them being from Finland.
