Retailers look for local suppliers

The horsemeat scandal is causing some retailers to shorten their supply chains in an attempt to reassure shoppers and gain more control over product integrity. In Germany, Rewe has announced that the private label beef products in its Rewe and Penny stores will only use German beef. “We have a special responsibility for our own brands,” the retailer said. Two French retailers, Carrefour and Intermarché, have initiated programs. Carrefour said in future it will only use beef and pork in ready meals from animals that were born, raised and slaughtered in France. Intermarché wants to identify beef on packaging for ready meals that comes entirely from France. In the UK, Tesco has pledged to source more of its meat from the UK and improve its testing regime in the wake of the horsemeat scandal. The retailer aims to source all chicken from Britain by July. Sainsbury has promised to double the amount of British food it sold.
