Bühler’s New CUBIC Campus Is All About Innovation

Bühler is gearing up for the official opening of its new innovation campus, called CUBIC, this spring. In February, employees will begin moving in the center located in Uzwil, Switzerland, which is the result of an investment of approximately EUR44m (CHF50m).

The CUBIC aims to drive business growth with constant output of innovative products and services, as well as bring collaborative innovation to the next level. Since the campus connects to the application centers where customers can conduct tests with Bühler technologies and experts, CUBIC will also be a hub for learning, exchange, and training. A strong focus will also be placed on digital transformation and services for reducing waste and energy consumption, among others.

According to company representatives, Bühler has long been committed to sustainability and the company is making progress towards its goal of cutting energy use, water consumption, and waste by 30% by the year 2020. The new center will help the company further this objective.

The company invests 4-5% of its turnover in research and development each year, as it looks to find new ways to meet is ambitious suitability targets. For example, CUBIC’s smart glass facade will significantly reduce energy costs. Buildings such as the CUBIC use smart glass facades with electrochromic glazing produced on Bühler Leybold Optics machinery, which require up to 50% less energy for heating and cooling. What’s more, 35% of Bühler’s R&D projects focus on improving energy efficiency per ton of end product or finished piece.

The company is putting an emphasis on digital solutions, as it aims to address another of the main challenges currently associated with the food industry – reducing food waste and feeding people with safe and nutritious food.

With a third of all food wasted or never reaching consumers in the first place, digital solutions can provide a precisely targeted means of making food production more sustainable and safer. loT and digital platforms like Bühler Insights create a vast potential for improving safety, efficiency, and traceability across production value chains. In 2018, Bühler entered a partnership with Microsoft and introduced a total of 20 digital services.

Exclusive details about the Bühler’s CUBIC center and projects will be available soon on our website and in print.
