Has the Snacking Revolution Arrived?

In the ever-evolving world of food trends, snacking has taken center stage, particularly among the younger generations.

According to Circana’s National Eating Trends for the year ended March 2023, Gen Z and younger millennials are redefining the concept of meals, favoring frequent snacking over traditional sit-down dining experiences. The data speaks volumes: Gen Z’s consumption of snacks away from home has surged by an impressive 10% compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the youngest Americans, dubbed Post-Gen Z, have taken snacking to new heights, with a huge 15% increase in snack consumption. Even Gen Xers have caught the snacking bug, with a 7% rise in their snack-eating habits. But what exactly are these snack-savvy consumers looking for? The answer is as diverse as their palates.

From indulging in donuts and sweet rolls during the morning snack occasion to satisfying cravings with frozen sweets, salty snacks, and French fries throughout the afternoon and evening, these on-the-go eaters are embracing snacks as a legitimate means of sustenance.

Interestingly, the vast majority (84%) of these snacks are consumed off-premises, be it in the car (42%), at home (39%), or even at work (11%), according to Circana CREST’s findings. This trend highlights the demand for portable, convenient, and versatile snack options that fit seamlessly into the fast-paced lifestyles of younger generations.

With snack consumption expected to soar in the coming year and beyond, foodservice operators have a golden opportunity to leverage a wide array of snack items to boost incremental sales. From reinventing classic favorites to introducing innovative snack options, the possibilities are endless.

So, is it time to embrace the snacking revolution? It would certainly seem that way, and as the ‘new product’ announcements keep on coming, what’s left is to see which of the snacking trends will redefine the industry in the following years.
