Frozen food retailer Iceland has signed up for the Treadmills regeneration scheme, which will see the former Northallerton Prison site in North Yorkshire, UK get converted into a shopping & office center, writes The Business Desk.

At Treadmills Iceland will occupy a unit of 6,000 square-feet on the ground floor and a further 2,300 square-feet at the mezzanine level.

The reconversion scheme is backed-up by the Central Northallerton Development Company, a joint venture between Hambleton District Council and Yorkshire property developer Wykeland Group. The GBP17m project will see five former prison buildings get restored. Construction on the first phase is set to begin this summer. The development is set to create 180 jobs during the construction phase and 250 jobs within the center itself once Treadmills opens its gates.

Discount supermarket Lidl has also agreed to a deal to occupy a 21,000 square-feet store at the new location.
