Lineage Logistics Celebrates Successful Hackathon Against Food Waste

One of the top names in cold chain logistics, Lineage Logistics, recently held their hackathon event, “Tackling Food Waste for a Sustainable Future.”

The event brought together some of the brightest minds from student and startup teams, NGOs, and supply chain leaders from all over Europe for an intense few days of innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving. It was held over two days in Amsterdam, with the final day at the Eye Film Museum.

In order to address the issues of food loss along the supply chain, participants from varied backgrounds and skill sets came together during the hackathon. Teams had to accurately track and trace the weight of food waste via several supply chain nodes. The participants put in a lot of effort over the course of two days to create creative solutions that might completely alter how food waste is addressed.

Following a thorough assessment by a panel of knowledgeable judges, Fungi For Future was declared the victorious team. Their outstanding inventiveness, technical know-how, and a creative, scalable proposal that centers on the creation of mycelium-based packaging material substitutes won them over to the judges.

In the words of the professional jury panel comprising Foodvalley NL, Van Geloven (a division of McCain), Taste Before You Waste, VU Amsterdam, and Lineage, “We are amazed by the level of talent and dedication displayed by all the participants in this hackathon,” stated Harld Peters, President, Lineage Europe. “The concepts and answers put forth highlight the remarkable capacity of astute and motivated problem-solvers to propel constructive transformation within our sector.”

The Waste Transformers and Lineage will facilitate a 6-month incubation program where the winner team, Fungi For Future, will get a monetary award and one-on-one mentorship to help them develop and maybe implement their idea.

“As a leader in on-site containerized food waste biodigesters worldwide, The Waste Transformers warmly welcomes student participation in tackling the pressing problems related to food waste. As program partners, we pledge to help Fungi For Future spread their powerful ideas over the next six months. CEO of The Waste Transformers, Lara van Druten, “These young minds have the ability to completely change how we handle food waste, which excites me much. We work together to create a more sustainable and greener future.”

“The Fungi For Future team said that participating in the hackathon was a great learning experience and that it was motivating to see everyone working toward the same objective of decreasing food waste.” “We are eager to move forward with the incubator program and the prize.”

Lineage would like to express its appreciation to all of the attendees, judges, and partners that helped make the event a success.
