WP Produce, a Miami-based family-owned grower, packer, and shipper of Desbry brand tropical fruits and roots, is expanding its portfolio with the introduction of frozen Hawaiian plantains and a new line of Malanga, Yuca, and Plantain Chips.
The move marks the company’s entry into both the frozen and snack food categories, further diversifying its lineup of tropical and exotic offerings.
The addition of Hawaiian plantains—frozen at peak ripeness—provides a convenient solution for wholesale, foodservice, and retail buyers seeking high-quality tropical produce.
Complementing this expansion is WP Produce’s new line of flavored veggie root chips, designed to meet rising consumer demand for clean, plant-based snack options.
“Produce plays an integral part in fresh and nutritious food consumption patterns, and while we are always bringing forth produce variety, like our fresh Hawaiian plantains, now we are also making it more convenient,” said Christopher Gonzalez, vice president of sales at WP Produce.
“Our new Desbry Frozen Hawaiian Plantains and Desbry Malanga, Yuca, and Plantain Chips offer premium, restaurant-quality options, diverse flavors, and simple ingredients. Layering trends with our robust produce inventory, we are innovating how our tropical and exotic produce varieties are consumed.”
Desbry Frozen Hawaiian Plantains, a plumper variation of traditional plantains known as Hua Moa, contain just three natural ingredients and are available in 2-pound bags or custom sizes. “Frozen lasts longer, is budget-friendly, and has all the nutritional value of fresh,” said Desiree Pardo Morales, a second-generation leader at WP Produce.
“With the growth of the US frozen food market, consumers are increasingly looking for clean, plant-based frozen foods, prompting innovation for healthier alternatives.”
As a major distributor of tropical fruits and roots across the United States, WP Produce employs a comprehensive merchandising strategy and efficient supply chain sourcing from Florida, the Dominican Republic, Central America, and South America. This ensures a year-round supply of its core offerings, including its signature Desbry Tropical Avocado—a variety known for its larger size and slower oxidation rate—alongside its latest foray into frozen and snack products.
Founded in 1984 by Willy Pardo, WP Produce began by selling exotic and tropical produce to neighbors who struggled to find these items in local grocery stores. Today, the company remains family-owned and operated, with Pardo’s daughter, Desiree Pardo Morales, and nephew, Christopher Gonzalez, leading the expansion of the Desbry brand into new product categories.
