SÜDPACK has joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and signed the commitment letter as part of its NET ZERO operations. The collaborative effort of the UN Global Compact, Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), World Resources Institute (WRI), Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), and others has set itself the objective of establishing effective climate protection on a business level in order to keep global warming to 1.5°C.
Thus, SÜDPACK is a member of a global group of businesses with similar beliefs and objectives. Above all, however, the global film manufacturer is committing to even more climate protection along the entire value chain, involvement that is based on recent climate science findings, and is making sure that its climate protection efforts are in line with the highest standards of the Paris Agreement.
Valeska Haux, SÜDPACK’s VP of Strategic Marketing, stressed, “It is based on our NET ZERO vision here at SÜDPACK that we are working hard on the continued improvement of our carbon footprint. Haux continued, “We are confident that the only way to properly address the issues of climate change is for industry, institutions, governments, and consumers to grow even more responsible, band together, and cooperate on ground-breaking solutions.
In April 2022, the SBTi commitment document was signed. SÜDPACK will present specific targets to the SBTi within the next 24 months and have them validated. As specified in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol requirements, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions as well as Scope 3 emissions, which have the biggest impact on SÜDPACK’s overall emissions, will be taken into consideration. Direct emissions from the corporation are referred to as scope 1 emissions. The company’s vehicles, incineration facilities, and refrigerants are all included in this. Scope 2 includes indirect emissions from leased assets, capital goods, business travel, waste, purchased energy, steam, cooling, and heating. The indirect emissions from upstream and downstream activities, such as the transportation, distribution, and logistics of purchased commodities, garbage, and staff commuting, are examined in scope 3.
Either specific actions to minimize Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have already been taken or are in the process of being put into action. Examples include increasing the amount of renewable energy used as well as making extra investments in photovoltaic systems at the manufacturing locations. The energy source has been switched to 100% renewable energy, and SÜDPACK has been sourcing 100% carbon neutral natural gas for all of its German sites since early 2022. SÜDPACK is also on the right track when it comes to Scope 3 with its firm commitment to a circular economy and recycling, as well as other steps that entail waste and material management or e-mobility.
