McCain Foods Releases 2023 Sustainability Report

Producer of one in four of the world’s French fries, McCain Foods has released its annual Global Sustainability Report, which highlights the brand’s progress toward its sustainability goals until 2023.

This year, a thorough month-by-month examination of living on a sustainable farm has also been included, in keeping with McCain’s aims for regenerative agriculture.

In keeping with its commitment, the report emphasizes that by the end of the decade, 100% of McCain’s potato acreage will be using regenerative agriculture practices. The brand also revealed that 28% of farmers are progressing up the framework toward a more comprehensive adoption of regenerative practices, and that over 50% of the farmers overseeing McCain’s global potato acreage have already integrated the practices.

Adopting more environmentally friendly farming practices is essential in the battle against climate change because the agriculture sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Regenerative agriculture reduces the impact of synthetic inputs, increases soil health, and improves farmer resilience, productivity, and quality.

Smart and Sustainable Farming, Resource-Efficient Operations, Good Food, and Thriving Communities are the report’s four pillars. Among the important conclusions are the following:

McCain has finished its first season at Farm of the Future Africa and its third season at Farm of the Future Canada. It has also improved water-use efficiency in water-stressed regions by 9.4%, trained more than 23,500 farmers, and met its goal of having water stress-tolerant varieties account for 21.9% of potatoes grown for McCain.

“As one of the most vulnerable sectors impacted by climate change, the food system is one of the most important levers to help drive a sustainable and resilient future,” says Max Koeune, president and CEO of McCain Foods. “That is why sustainability is at the heart of our purpose as a business. We are pleased to share an update on how we are making strides towards our goals in key areas that will ensure we have resource efficient operations, are farming in a smart and sustainable way and are contributing to building thriving communities in the areas that we operate, all while we continue to produce good food.”
