As the food industry prepares for Anuga, it seems like a good moment to track the trends that had us talking about during the better part of this year.
And while many of the things that had an impact on the industry were mostly unrelated to it – think of tariffs, geopolitical instability, or the rising number of conflicts, there were still some instances directly tied to its core.
Health, wellness & ingredient transparency are among these trends. Simpler, more natural ingredient lists—often referred to as clean labels—are becoming a top priority, alongside efforts to cut back on sugar, salt, artificial colors, additives, and sweeteners.
At the same time, personalized nutrition, which adapts diets to individual health needs, is moving steadily into the mainstream. We then move to sustainability, which, as several companies have pointed out, is no longer optional. The food industry is under mounting pressure from consumers, regulators, and supply chain partners to lessen its environmental footprint.
Key areas of focus include responsible sourcing, sustainable packaging, waste reduction, and improved standards for animal welfare. Increasingly, practices such as regenerative agriculture, ethical procurement, and full ingredient traceability are becoming essential priorities.
We can’t put aside technologies such as AI, IoT, robotics, and biotechnology, which continue to reshape the food sector at every stage. From precision farming in agriculture to investments in processing, packaging, distribution, and even kitchen automation, these innovations are driving greater efficiency, cutting waste, enhancing safety, and enabling quicker responses to consumer demands. Biotechnology—through developments like alternative proteins, fermentation, and cellular agriculture—is one to watch.
