The first digital magazine for 2019 by Frozen Food Europe is now out and can be accessed for free. It is available in an interactive and easy-to-read format, both for tablet and mobile.

For this edition, we are taking a look at the European market for frozen vegetables, at a glance. Europe is the largest market for frozen fruit and vegetables in the world, representing nearly 50% of the total world imports. European imports are concentrated and the three largest importers (Germany, France and the United Kingdom) account for more than half of the total.

According to the data from CBI, Belgium, Poland and Spain are the leading suppliers of frozen fruit and vegetables in Europe. Since 2013, exports of frozen fruits and vegetables from Europe have grown by 3% in value and by 2% in volume. Exports reached EUR4.9bn or 45m tons in 2017. The main destinations for exports from the European Union in 2017 were the United States (mostly frozen vegetables), Switzerland (mostly frozen fruit) and Australia (mostly frozen vegetables and mixtures of vegetables).

In this context, Mintel’s Katya Witham says Europe is the most innovative market for frozen fruit and vegetables in the world, representing 44% of the total world frozen fruit and vegetables introductions in the past 12 months. Accounting for the nearly one-fifth (17%) of all frozen fruit and vegetables introduction, Germany is leading the way in frozen innovation in Europe, followed by the UK (11%), Italy (10%) and Spain (10%).

The frozen vegetable sector is backed up by equipment manufacturers which are seeking to provide increasingly proficient machines to aid processors produce qualitative end-products.
